Loggly vs Sentry: What are the differences?
Introduction
In this analysis, we will present the key differences between Loggly and Sentry, both of which are popular logging and error tracking platforms used by software developers.
Integration Capabilities: Loggly offers integration with a wide range of systems and platforms including AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Heroku, and many more, making it flexible and compatible with various environments. On the other hand, Sentry focuses primarily on providing robust integrations with popular programming languages and frameworks such as Python, JavaScript, Ruby, and Java. This allows developers to seamlessly integrate Sentry into their existing development workflows.
Logging Features: Loggly emphasizes extensive log management capabilities, providing features such as log search, filtering, and analytics. It also offers log aggregation and auto-parsing of log data, enabling easy analysis and troubleshooting. Sentry, on the other hand, goes beyond traditional logging and focuses more on error tracking and exception monitoring. It provides detailed error reports, exception handling, and real-time alerts, allowing developers to identify and resolve issues quickly.
Scale and Performance: Loggly is designed to handle large volumes of log data efficiently, making it suitable for high-traffic applications and large-scale infrastructures. It offers scalable infrastructure and supports high throughput log ingestion. Sentry, while also capable of handling significant volumes of logging data, prioritizes real-time error tracking and exception monitoring rather than high-volume log management.
Pricing Model: Loggly follows a tiered pricing model based on the volume of log data processed and storage requirements. It offers various plans tailored to different usage levels. On the other hand, Sentry offers a flexible and transparent pricing structure based on the number of events and users. This allows developers to choose a pricing plan that aligns with their specific needs and requirements.
User Interface: Loggly provides a user-friendly web interface with intuitive navigation and an easy-to-use search functionality. It offers visualizations and customizable dashboards for data analysis and monitoring. Sentry also offers a well-designed and intuitive user interface but focuses more on providing comprehensive error reporting and exception details for effective debugging.
Community and Support: Loggly has an active user community and provides extensive documentation, tutorials, and forums for user support and knowledge sharing. It also offers email-based customer support for its users. Sentry boasts a strong developer community and provides dedicated support channels including a public issue tracker and a community-driven plugin ecosystem. It also offers professional support options for enterprise customers.
In Summary, Loggly and Sentry differ in terms of integration capabilities, logging features, scalability, pricing models, user interface, and support options, enabling developers to choose the platform that best aligns with their specific needs and requirements.
I essentially inherited a Shopify theme that was originally created by an agency. After discovering a number of errors being thrown in the Dev Console just by scrolling through the website, I needed more visibility over any errors happening in the field. Having used both Sentry and TrackJS, I always got lost in the TrackJS interface, so I felt more comfortable introducing Sentry. The Sentry free tier is also very generous, although it turns out the theme threw over 15k errors in less than a week.
I highly recommend setting up error tracking from day one. Theoretically, you should never need to upgrade from the free tier if you're keeping on top of the errors...
