Google Compute Engine vs Hetzner Online AG: What are the differences?

<Google Compute Engine (GCE) and Hetzner Online AG are both cloud computing platforms that offer scalable infrastructure and virtual servers to users. Here are the key differences between the two services.>

  1. Pricing and Billing: Google Compute Engine follows a pay-as-you-go pricing model, where customers are billed based on their actual usage of resources. Hetzner Online AG, on the other hand, offers a more traditional pricing structure with fixed monthly fees for predefined server configurations. This difference in pricing models can impact the overall cost for users depending on their resource utilization.

  2. Data Center Locations: Google Compute Engine has a vast network of data centers spread across different regions globally, providing users with options to deploy their resources closer to their target audience for lower latency. In contrast, Hetzner Online AG primarily operates data centers in Europe, limiting the geographic diversity compared to Google's wider reach. This can be crucial for users who require specific data center locations for regulatory or performance reasons.

  3. Virtual Machine Types: Google Compute Engine offers a wide variety of virtual machine types with customizable configurations, including machine types optimized for specific workloads such as compute-optimized, memory-optimized, and GPU-enabled instances. Hetzner Online AG, on the other hand, provides a more limited selection of pre-configured server types, which may not offer the same level of flexibility for users with specialized requirements.

  4. Support and SLA: Google Compute Engine typically offers 24/7 customer support and service level agreements (SLAs) for uptime and performance guarantees, ensuring a high level of reliability for users. Hetzner Online AG also provides support services but may have different response times and SLAs compared to Google's offerings, potentially impacting the level of support available to users during critical situations.

In Summary, Google Compute Engine and Hetzner Online AG differ in their pricing models, data center locations, virtual machine types, and support services, which can influence users' choices based on their specific requirements and priorities.

Advice on Google Compute Engine, Hetzner Online AG

GCE is much more user friendly than EC2, though Amazon has come a very long way since the early days (pre-2010's). This can be seen in how easy it is to edit the storage attached to an instance in GCE: it's under the instance details and is edited inline. In AWS you have to click the instance > click the storage block device (new screen) > click the edit option (new modal) > resize the volume > confirm (new model) then wait a very long time. Google's is nearly instant.

  • In both cases, the instance much be shut down.

There also the preference between "user burden-of-security" and automatic security: AWS goes for the former, GCE the latter.

Hetzner Online AG
Hetzner Online AG

Google Compute Engine is a service that provides virtual machines that run on Google infrastructure. Google Compute Engine offers scale, performance, and value that allows you to easily launch large compute clusters on Google's infrastructure. There are no upfront investments and you can run up to thousands of virtual CPUs on a system that has been designed from the ground up to be fast, and to offer strong consistency of performance.

Hetzner Online is a professional web hosting provider and experienced data center operator. Since 1997 the company has provided private and business clients with high-performance hosting products as well as the necessary infrastructure for the efficient operation of websites.

High-performance virtual machines- Compute Engine’s Linux VMs are consistently performant, scalable, highly secure and reliable. Supported distros include Debian and CentOS. You can choose from micro-VMs to large instances.;Powered by Google’s global network- Create large compute clusters that benefit from strong and consistent cross-machine bandwidth. Connect to machines in other data centers and to other Google services using Google’s private global fiber network.;(Really) Pay for what you use- Google bills in minute-level increments (with a 10-minute minimum charge), so you don’t pay for unused computing time.;Load balancing- Native load-balancing technology helps you spread incoming network traffic across a pool of instances, so you can achieve maximum performance, throughput and availability at low cost.;Fast and easy provisioning- Quickly deploy large clusters of virtual machines with intuitive tools including a RESTful API, command-line interface and web-based Console. You can also use tools such as RightScale and Scalr to automatically manage your deployment.;Compliance and security- All data written to disk in Compute Engine is encrypted at rest using the AES-128-CBC algorithm. Compute Engine has completed ISO 27001, SSAE-16, SOC 1, SOC 2, and SOC 3 certifications, demonstrating our commitment to information security.
