Heroku vs fortrabbit: What are the differences?

Introduction: In the realm of cloud platform services, both Heroku and fortrabbit are widely recognized options for developers seeking to deploy and manage applications. Despite sharing similarities in their core functionalities, they diverge in various aspects that distinctly characterize each platform.

  1. Pricing Model: Heroku primarily operates on a pay-as-you-go model, allowing users to scale resources up or down based on usage demands, while fortrabbit adopts a fixed pricing model based on predefined tiers, providing a more predictable cost structure for users.

  2. Server Infrastructure: Heroku utilizes Amazon Web Services (AWS) for its server infrastructure, offering a broad range of AWS services integrated into the platform, whereas fortrabbit employs its proprietary infrastructure built on dedicated servers, resulting in potentially different performance metrics and service levels.

  3. Customizability: Heroku emphasizes simplicity and ease of use, providing a high level of abstraction and automation in the deployment process, whereas fortrabbit offers more granular control and customization options, allowing users to fine-tune various aspects of their application environment.

  4. Database Options: While Heroku offers a variety of database options and integrates seamlessly with popular databases like PostgreSQL, fortrabbit provides limited database choices, primarily focusing on MySQL as the main database solution, which may influence the decision-making process for developers with specific database requirements.

  5. Collaboration Tools: Heroku prioritizes team collaboration and integration with popular tools like GitHub, facilitating seamless collaboration among developers, whereas fortrabbit may offer fewer built-in collaboration features, requiring users to rely more on third-party tools for team collaboration and integration.

  6. Support Services: Heroku provides comprehensive support services, including documentation, community forums, and direct customer support channels, catering to users with varying levels of technical expertise, while fortrabbit may offer more specialized support services tailored to specific needs, potentially appealing to users seeking more personalized assistance.

In Summary, Heroku and fortrabbit differ in their pricing models, server infrastructures, customizability levels, database options, collaboration tools, and support services, offering developers a range of choices based on their specific requirements and preferences.

Decisions about fortrabbit and Heroku

I'm transitioning to Render from heroku. The pricing scale matches my usage scale, yet it's just as easy to deploy. It's removed a lot of the devops that I don't like to deal with on setting up my own raw *nix box and makes deployment simple and easy!

Clustering I don't use clustering features at the moment but when i need to set up clustering of nodes and discoverability, render will enable that where Heroku would require that I use an external service like redis.

Restarts The restarts are annoying. I understand the reasoning, but I'd rather watch my service if its got a memory leak and work to fix it than to just assume that it has memory leaks and needs to restart.
