Chargebee vs GoCardless: What are the differences?

  1. Key Difference 1: Integration Capabilities: Chargebee offers integration with more than 30 payment gateways, allowing businesses to accept payments from customers all over the world. On the other hand, GoCardless focuses primarily on direct debit payments and provides integrations with a limited number of payment gateways. This difference gives Chargebee a broader scope for accepting different payment methods, while GoCardless specializes in recurring direct debits.

  2. Key Difference 2: Payment Methods: Chargebee supports a wide range of payment methods, including credit/debit cards, ACH, SEPA, and PayPal. Additionally, it offers customers the choice to pay using one-time or recurring payments. In contrast, GoCardless primarily focuses on direct debit payments, providing bank-to-bank transfers for recurring billing. This difference allows Chargebee to cater to a wider customer base with different payment preferences, while GoCardless primarily serves customers who prefer direct debit payment options.

  3. Key Difference 3: Pricing Structure: Chargebee offers multiple pricing plans based on the size and requirements of the business, allowing businesses to choose a plan that suits their needs. Additionally, it provides a tiered pricing model based on the number of customers and usage, providing flexibility for businesses to scale. In contrast, GoCardless follows a fixed pricing model with a flat fee per transaction, which may be suitable for businesses with simpler requirements and lower transaction volumes. This difference gives Chargebee more pricing flexibility and scalability options compared to GoCardless.

  4. Key Difference 4: Customer Support: Chargebee provides 24/7 customer support through email, live chat, and phone, ensuring that businesses can seek assistance and resolve issues promptly. It also offers a dedicated customer success manager for higher-level support. On the other hand, GoCardless offers customer support during business hours and primarily relies on email communication. This difference gives Chargebee an edge in terms of responsive customer support and personalized assistance.

  5. Key Difference 5: International Expansion: Chargebee supports multiple languages, currencies, and tax regulations, enabling businesses to expand globally without constraints. It also complies with various regional regulations, such as GDPR and SCA. In contrast, GoCardless has limited language and currency options, mainly focusing on countries where their direct debit payments are available. This difference allows Chargebee to cater to businesses with international operations more effectively.

  6. Key Difference 6: Subscription Management: Chargebee offers comprehensive subscription management features, including subscription lifecycle management, metered billing, and revenue recognition, allowing businesses to effectively manage and monetize their subscriptions. GoCardless, on the other hand, primarily focuses on the payment aspect of subscription management, simplifying the recurring payment process. This difference positions Chargebee as a more robust solution for businesses requiring advanced subscription management capabilities.

In summary, Chargebee offers broader integration capabilities, supports a wider range of payment methods, provides flexible pricing options, offers responsive customer support, enables international expansion, and provides comprehensive subscription management features. On the other hand, GoCardless specializes in direct debit payments, follows a fixed pricing model, offers limited customer support options, has narrower regional coverage, and focuses primarily on the payment aspect of subscription management.

Not only is ReCharge more interoperable with Shopify services and apps, thereby reducing the amount of work required to implement it, but it's also more cost-effective than ChargeBee.

At least with regard to handling physical products, I find ReCharge to be superior and cleaner. Their customer service is kinder AND they even let you try them out for the first $100k worth of recurring revenue, so you can really get a feel for whether or not it will be a good tool for your organization in the long run.

If you use Shopify, sell physical goods, and have complex subscription needs, ya can't go wrong with ReCharge. Plus, the cost is reasonable, so give it a go!

If you're in the SaaS business, ChargeBee may be more appropriate though.

With COVID-19 looming over us, businesses are, more than ever, looking for ways to set up online payments.

And having recently gone through implementing both Stripe and GoCardless to get monthly subscriptions set up and automated on my company website, I felt there was no better time to write this blog post!

If you're currently looking at working with a Payment Gateway provider API, or you're currently working with one but are not a fan, are looking to automate things a bit more, or are just generally thinking about changing, then you should have a read of my latest blog post where I compare Stripe and GoCardless.

I compare APIs in depth, specifically the subscription checkout flow that both offer (they're very similar, with some BIG differences).

There are plenty of code examples on how to set it up in a Node.js environment and right at the end, I rate each API based on the following factors:

  • API ease of use
  • API documentation
  • Payment pages
  • Costs / fees
  • Security
  • Developer appeal
  • Customer experience
  • Free Trial

So feel free to check it out, and I hope you like it. Please leave any feedback as it is very helpful. Thanks!
