Sequel Pro vs phpMyAdmin: What are the differences?

Introduction

Sequel Pro and phpMyAdmin are both popular tools for managing and interacting with MySQL databases. Although they serve the same purpose, there are several key differences between these two tools.

  1. User Interface: Sequel Pro has a sleek and intuitive user interface, making it easy for users to navigate and interact with the database. On the other hand, phpMyAdmin has a more traditional and cluttered interface, which may be overwhelming for some users.

  2. Compatibility: Sequel Pro is available for macOS only, while phpMyAdmin can be used on any operating system with a web browser. This makes phpMyAdmin a more versatile choice for users working on different platforms.

  3. Local Database Support: Sequel Pro allows users to easily connect and manage local databases, making it a convenient tool for local development. In contrast, phpMyAdmin is commonly used for managing databases on remote servers.

  4. Advanced Features: Sequel Pro offers advanced features like visual query building, SSH tunneling, and direct table editing. These features make it a powerful tool for advanced users who require more functionality. On the other hand, phpMyAdmin provides a basic set of features and may not offer the same level of customization and advanced options.

  5. Security: Sequel Pro provides the option to securely connect to the database using SSH tunneling, ensuring that the data being transmitted is encrypted. PhpMyAdmin, on the other hand, may not offer the same level of security by default and may require additional setups for secure connections.

  6. Development and Support: Sequel Pro is an open-source project that is actively developed and maintained by the community. This results in frequent updates and bug fixes to improve the user experience. PhpMyAdmin, while also open-source, may not have the same level of active development and community support as Sequel Pro.

In summary, Sequel Pro and phpMyAdmin differ in terms of user interface, compatibility, local database support, advanced features, security, and development and support. Based on individual needs and preferences, users can choose the tool that best suits their requirements.

Decisions about phpMyAdmin and Sequel Pro
Adam Taylor

We were looking a tool that would allow us to do MySQL and PostgreSQL development/administration from a single tool. We decided on Navicat Premium because it can connect to MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL, and SQLite databases - and simultaneously. It's also compatible with Amazon RDS and Microsoft Azure, which we also use.

Moreover, we previously experienced the occasional freezing and crashing in MySQL Workbench. It also suffered from a poor design, with certain features being a bit difficult to find. Meanwhile, phpMyAdmin lacked schema visualization tools and seemed better suited to lightweight day to day transactions than some of the big jobs that we needed to do.
