Google Maps vs Stadia Maps: What are the differences?

Key Differences between Google Maps and Stadia Maps

Google Maps and Stadia Maps are both popular mapping platforms, but they have several key differences.

  1. Integration with Gaming Platform: One of the main differences between Google Maps and Stadia Maps is their integration with gaming platforms. While Google Maps focuses on providing location-based services and navigation, Stadia Maps is specifically designed for gaming experiences on the Stadia platform. Stadia Maps allows game developers to create interactive game worlds using real-world mapping data.

  2. Multiplayer Support: Stadia Maps offers built-in multiplayer support, allowing gamers to seamlessly interact with other players in the game world. This feature enables multiplayer gaming experiences and encourages collaboration among players. On the other hand, Google Maps is primarily focused on providing mapping and navigation services to individual users and doesn't have built-in multiplayer support for gaming purposes.

  3. Customization Options: Google Maps provides extensive customization options for developers and users to personalize the map appearance and features. It offers a variety of map styles, markers, overlays, and other visual elements that can be customized according to individual preferences. In contrast, Stadia Maps has more limited customization options since it prioritizes delivering a consistent experience across different games on the Stadia platform.

  4. API Availability: Another significant difference between Google Maps and Stadia Maps is their API availability and usage. Google Maps has a well-documented and widely-used API that developers can incorporate into their websites and applications to integrate mapping functionalities. Stadia Maps, on the other hand, is primarily designed for game development and doesn't offer a public API for general usage outside of the Stadia platform.

  5. Usage Scenarios: Google Maps is commonly used for real-time navigation, finding local businesses, and exploring places of interest. It is widely utilized by individuals, businesses, and developers in various industries. In contrast, Stadia Maps is specifically designed for gaming purposes and is used within the Stadia platform to create immersive and interactive game environments.

  6. Data Availability: Google Maps provides a vast amount of mapping data, including street maps, satellite imagery, and 3D models, covering almost every part of the world. This comprehensive dataset allows for accurate navigation and visualization. Stadia Maps, on the other hand, focuses on providing game-specific data, such as terrain, buildings, and environmental features, to enhance the gaming experience. The level of detail and coverage may vary between the two platforms, depending on their respective objectives.

In Summary, Google Maps is a versatile mapping platform primarily used for navigation and location-based services, while Stadia Maps is a gaming-oriented mapping platform integrated with the Stadia gaming platform, offering multiplayer support and tailored mapping data for game development.

Advice on Google Maps and Stadia Maps

From a StackShare Community member: "We're a team of two starting to write a mobile app. The app will heavily rely on maps and this is where my partner and I are not seeing eye-to-eye. I would like to go with an open source solution like OpenStreetMap that is used by Apple & Foursquare. He would like to go with Google Maps since more apps use it and has better support (according to him). Mapbox is also an option but I don’t know much about it."

I use Mapbox because We need 3D maps and navigation, it has a great plugin for React and React Native which we use. Also the Mapbox Geocoder is great.

Google Maps is best because it is practically free (they give you $300 in free credits per month and it's really hard to go over the free tier unless you really mean business) and it's the best!
