DigitalOcean vs Laravel Forge: What are the differences?

Introduction

DigitalOcean and Laravel Forge are both popular platforms for developers to deploy and manage their applications. While they have some similarities, there are several key differences between the two.

1. Pricing: DigitalOcean offers a pay-as-you-go pricing model, where you are billed based on your usage of resources like virtual machines and storage. On the other hand, Laravel Forge has a fixed monthly pricing model, where you pay a set amount regardless of your resource usage. This can be advantageous for developers who want predictable costs.

2. User Interface and Ease of Use: DigitalOcean has a user-friendly and intuitive interface that makes it easy for developers to navigate and manage their infrastructure. Laravel Forge, on the other hand, simplifies the process of setting up and managing servers and websites by providing a more streamlined and focused user interface. This can be beneficial for developers who prefer a simpler and more straightforward experience.

3. Server Management: DigitalOcean allows you to manage your servers directly through their platform, giving you full control over server administration tasks. Laravel Forge, on the other hand, abstracts server management tasks by providing a user-friendly control panel and automating many server configuration tasks. This can be advantageous for developers who want to focus more on their application development and less on server management.

4. Application Deployment: DigitalOcean allows you to deploy applications directly on their servers using tools like SSH and Docker. Laravel Forge, on the other hand, simplifies the application deployment process by providing a built-in deployment system that integrates with popular version control systems like Git. This can be beneficial for developers who want a seamless and automated deployment process.

5. Additional Services: DigitalOcean offers a wide range of additional services like load balancers, managed databases, and object storage, which can be easily integrated with your infrastructure. Laravel Forge, on the other hand, focuses solely on server and application management and does not provide additional services. This can be advantageous for developers who need more services and resources beyond server management.

6. Community and Support: DigitalOcean has a large and active community of developers, with a wealth of resources like tutorials, forums, and community-driven projects. Laravel Forge, on the other hand, has a smaller community but offers dedicated support and documentation for their platform. This can be beneficial for developers who want more personalized support and guidance.

In summary, DigitalOcean offers more flexibility and a wider range of services, while Laravel Forge provides a simplified and streamlined experience for managing servers and deploying applications. The choice between the two depends on your specific needs and preferences as a developer.

Amazon EC2Amazon EC2DigitalOceanDigitalOcean

DigitalOcean was where I began; its USD5/month is extremely competitive and the overall experience as highly user-friendly.

However, their offerings were lacking and integrating with other resources I had on AWS was getting more costly (due to transfer costs on AWS). Eventually I moved the entire project off DO's Droplets and onto AWS's EC2.

One may initially find the cost (w/o free tier) and interface of AWS daunting however with good planning you can achieve highly cost-efficient systems with savings plans, spot instances, etcetera.

Do not dive into AWS head-first! Seriously, don't. Stand back and read pricing documentation thoroughly. You can, not to the fault of AWS, easily go way overbudget. Your first action upon getting your AWS account should be to set up billing alarms for estimated and current bill totals.
