Chartio vs Tableau: What are the differences?

# Key Differences Between Chartio and Tableau

Chartio and Tableau are both powerful data visualization tools, with key differences that cater to different user needs. Below are the main differences between Chartio and Tableau:

1. **Data Sources**: Chartio is best suited for users who primarily work with cloud-based data sources such as Google Sheets, Amazon Redshift, or PostgreSQL, while Tableau provides more flexibility in connecting to a wider range of data sources including local databases, spreadsheets, and cloud services like Google BigQuery and Salesforce.

2. **User Interface**: Tableau offers a more user-friendly interface with drag-and-drop functionality, making it easier for beginners to create visualizations and dashboards. In contrast, Chartio has a steeper learning curve due to its more technical interface and SQL-based querying system, which may be better suited for users experienced in SQL.

3. **Collaboration Tools**: Tableau provides robust collaboration features such as Tableau Server and Tableau Online, making it easier for teams to share and access visualizations in a secure environment. Chartio, on the other hand, lacks native collaboration tools and may require additional integrations or workarounds for team collaboration.

4. **Customization Options**: Tableau offers more advanced customization options for visuals and dashboards, allowing users to create complex and interactive visualizations with greater control over formatting and design. Chartio, while still providing customization capabilities, may have limitations in terms of design flexibility compared to Tableau.

5. **Cost**: The pricing structure of Chartio and Tableau differs significantly, with Chartio offering a subscription-based model based on the number of users and data rows, while Tableau provides various licensing options including a subscription-based model, perpetual licensing, and a free Public version with limited features.

6. **Community Support**: Tableau has a larger and more active user community with a wealth of online resources, forums, and user groups, making it easier for users to find help, share insights, and learn from others. Chartio, while having a supportive community, may not be as extensive or well-known as Tableau's community.

In Summary, Chartio and Tableau differ in terms of data sources, user interface, collaboration tools, customization options, cost, and community support, catering to different user preferences and needs.

Decisions about Chartio and Tableau

Very easy-to-use UI. Good way to make data available inside the company for analysis.

Has some built-in visualizations and can be easily integrated with other JS visualization libraries such as D3.

Can be embedded into product to provide reporting functions.

Support team are helpful.

The only complain I have is lack of API support. Hard to track changes as codes and automate report deployment.

Power BI is really easy to start with. If you have just several Excel sheets or CSV files, or you build your first automated pipeline, it is actually quite intuitive to build your first reports.

And as we have kept growing, all the additional features and tools were just there within the Azure platform and/or Office 365.

Since we started building Mews, we have already passed several milestones in becoming start up, later also a scale up company and now getting ready to grow even further, and during all these phases Power BI was just the right tool for us.
