Snipcart vs Stripe: What are the differences?

Introduction

In this article, we will compare the key differences between Snipcart and Stripe, two popular payment processing platforms. Understanding these differences can help businesses and developers make an informed decision when choosing the right platform for their ecommerce needs.

  1. Pricing and Fees: Snipcart offers a transparent pricing model with a fixed monthly fee based on the number of products sold, while Stripe operates on a pay-as-you-go model with transaction-based fees. This means that with Snipcart, businesses can have more predictable monthly expenses, whereas Stripe may be more cost-effective for businesses with a lower volume of transactions.

  2. Integration and Ease of Use: Snipcart is a fully hosted solution that can be easily integrated into any website with just a few lines of code, making it a user-friendly option for developers. In contrast, Stripe provides a more comprehensive set of APIs and tools, allowing for greater customization and control over the payment process. This makes Stripe a more flexible option for businesses with unique ecommerce requirements.

  3. International Support: Stripe has a broader international presence, supporting businesses in over 40 countries, while Snipcart is currently available in fewer countries. This global reach allows Stripe to handle transactions in various currencies and comply with different local regulations, making it a better choice for businesses with a global customer base.

  4. Advanced Features: Stripe offers advanced features such as subscription management, recurring billing, and robust fraud prevention tools. These features make it suitable for businesses that require complex payment workflows or have recurring revenue models. On the other hand, Snipcart focuses on providing a simple and streamlined checkout experience, making it an ideal choice for businesses with straightforward ecommerce needs.

  5. Developer Experience: Snipcart aims to provide an out-of-the-box solution, with easy setup and a user-friendly dashboard for non-technical users. Stripe, on the other hand, offers a more powerful developer toolkit, including extensive documentation, SDKs, and libraries. This makes Stripe a better choice for businesses that want to customize and integrate payment processing into their existing infrastructure.

  6. Support and Documentation: Both Snipcart and Stripe offer comprehensive documentation and support resources. However, Stripe has a larger community of developers and a more extensive knowledge base, providing businesses with a wealth of resources to troubleshoot and find solutions to their payment processing challenges.

In summary, Snipcart offers transparent pricing and a user-friendly interface, making it suitable for businesses with straightforward ecommerce needs. Stripe, on the other hand, provides greater flexibility, advanced features, and international support, making it a preferred choice for businesses with complex payment requirements or a global customer base.

We use GoCardless to simplify the way clients and partners pay for our services. What intrigued us is the quick and easy ACH feature that gives our clients the option to log in with their bank account and shoot the funds directly to our account. The fee, compared to Stripe is less. Stripe and PayPal charge 2.9% + 30c and Stripe also forces the client to enter in all of their payment details manually and then if the payment doesn't work, the client has to try all over again. GoCardless charges 1% + 25c which is much more reasonable dealing with the large projects that we are currently working on.

We integrate GoCardless with Xero to easily send out quick invoices, receive the funds and track all revenue in one place.

With COVID-19 looming over us, businesses are, more than ever, looking for ways to set up online payments.

And having recently gone through implementing both Stripe and GoCardless to get monthly subscriptions set up and automated on my company website, I felt there was no better time to write this blog post!

If you're currently looking at working with a Payment Gateway provider API, or you're currently working with one but are not a fan, are looking to automate things a bit more, or are just generally thinking about changing, then you should have a read of my latest blog post where I compare Stripe and GoCardless.

I compare APIs in depth, specifically the subscription checkout flow that both offer (they're very similar, with some BIG differences).

There are plenty of code examples on how to set it up in a Node.js environment and right at the end, I rate each API based on the following factors:

  • API ease of use
  • API documentation
  • Payment pages
  • Costs / fees
  • Security
  • Developer appeal
  • Customer experience
  • Free Trial

So feel free to check it out, and I hope you like it. Please leave any feedback as it is very helpful. Thanks!

Stripe was made with developers in mind first so the extensibility of it is great! This makes it very easy for us to integrate and automate as much as we need with its APIs and SDK. It allows a lot of customization of exactly what we need to build our applications. They also manage all of our customers from a tax and accounting perspective which makes it easy from a business standpoint.
