Puppet Labs vs Runcloud: What are the differences?

**Introduction:**
Puppet Labs and Runcloud are two popular tools used for managing servers and automating tasks. While both offer functionalities to simplify server management, there are key differences between the two platforms.

1. **Deployment Ease**: Puppet Labs offers a more comprehensive and detailed approach to server management, allowing for extensive customization and configuration options. On the other hand, Runcloud focuses on simplicity and ease of use, providing a user-friendly interface that streamlines the deployment process for users without extensive technical knowledge.

2. **Supported Platforms**: Puppet Labs supports a wide range of operating systems and cloud providers, making it a versatile choice for environments with diverse infrastructure. Runcloud, on the other hand, is focused primarily on supporting popular cloud platforms such as AWS, DigitalOcean, Google Cloud, and Linode, catering to a more specific user base.

3. **Scalability**: Puppet Labs is designed to handle complex infrastructures and large-scale deployments, making it suitable for enterprises with extensive server networks. Runcloud, while scalable, is more optimized for smaller to medium-sized environments, offering a lightweight solution for managing fewer servers.

4. **Pricing Model**: Puppet Labs follows a subscription-based pricing model, with different tiers based on the features and support levels offered. In comparison, Runcloud offers a more straightforward pricing structure with a flat rate per server, making it easier for users to budget and predict costs.

5. **Feature Set**: Puppet Labs provides a robust set of features for configuration management, orchestration, and automation, making it ideal for DevOps teams looking for comprehensive tools. Runcloud, while powerful in server management capabilities, focuses more on simplifying common tasks such as server monitoring, backups, and SSL certificate installations.

6. **Community Support**: Puppet Labs has a large and active community of users, offering a wealth of resources, tutorials, and community-contributed modules to aid in server management tasks. Runcloud, while having a growing user base, may have a smaller community presence in comparison, which can impact the availability of support and additional resources.

In Summary, Puppet Labs and Runcloud cater to different user needs, with Puppet Labs offering extensive customization and scalability for enterprise-level environments, while Runcloud focuses on simplicity and user-friendly deployment options for smaller to medium-sized setups.

I'm just getting started using Vagrant to help automate setting up local VMs to set up a Kubernetes cluster (development and experimentation only). (Yes, I do know about minikube)

I'm looking for a tool to help install software packages, setup users, etc..., on these VMs. I'm also fairly new to Ansible, Chef, and Puppet. What's a good one to start with to learn? I might decide to try all 3 at some point for my own curiosity.

The most important factors for me are simplicity, ease of use, shortest learning curve.

AnsibleAnsible

I have been working with Puppet and Ansible. The reason why I prefer ansible is the distribution of it. Ansible is more lightweight and therefore more popular. This leads to situations, where you can get fully packaged applications for ansible (e.g. confluent) supported by the vendor, but only incomplete packages for Puppet.

The only advantage I would see with Puppet if someone wants to use Foreman. This is still better supported with Puppet.

If you are just starting out, might as well learn Kubernetes There's a lot of tools that come with Kube that make it easier to use and most importantly: you become cloud-agnostic. We use Ansible because it's a lot simpler than Chef or Puppet and if you use Docker Compose for your deployments you can re-use them with Kubernetes later when you migrate
