Postman vs Reqbin: What are the differences?

Introduction: Postman and Reqbin are both tools used for API testing and development. While they serve a similar purpose, there are key differences between the two that make each tool unique.

  1. User Interface: Postman provides a more visually appealing and intuitive user interface compared to Reqbin. It offers a cleaner layout, organized tabs, and an easy-to-use navigation menu. On the other hand, Reqbin has a simple and straightforward user interface, which might be preferred by users who value simplicity.

  2. Collaboration Features: Postman offers advanced collaboration features, such as team workspaces, version control, and role-based access control. These features allow multiple team members to work together on API development and testing projects. Reqbin, on the other hand, does not provide such collaboration features, making it more suitable for individual use or smaller teams.

  3. API Documentation: Postman allows users to generate and publish API documentation directly from their collections. This feature is particularly useful for developers who want to share their API documentation with stakeholders or external users. Reqbin does not have a built-in documentation feature, requiring users to rely on other tools or platforms for API documentation.

  4. Pre-request Scripts: Postman allows users to include pre-request scripts in their requests. These scripts can be used to modify requests dynamically, perform calculations, or generate random data. Reqbin does not provide this functionality, limiting the users' ability to manipulate their requests before sending them.

  5. Automation and Testing: Postman supports automation and testing by allowing users to create and run tests on their requests and responses. It provides a wide range of assertions and test scripts that can be included in the workflow. Reqbin, on the other hand, does not have built-in automation and testing capabilities, focusing primarily on manual API testing.

  6. Pricing and Plans: Postman offers both free and paid plans, with additional features and capabilities available for paid subscribers. Reqbin, on the other hand, is completely free to use without any paid plans or premium features. This makes Reqbin a more cost-effective option for users who do not require advanced features or extensive collaboration capabilities.

In summary, Postman offers a visually appealing user interface, advanced collaboration features, API documentation generation, pre-request scripts, automation and testing capabilities, and a variety of pricing plans. Reqbin, on the other hand, focuses on simplicity with its straightforward user interface, lack of collaboration features, no built-in documentation, limited request manipulation options, absence of automation and testing capabilities, and completely free usage.

From a StackShare Community member: "I just started working for a start-up and we are in desperate need of better documentation for our API. Currently our API docs is in a README.md file. We are evaluating Postman and Swagger UI. Since there are many options and I was wondering what other StackSharers would recommend?"

I use Postman because of the ease of team-management, using workspaces and teams, runner, collections, environment variables, test-scripts (post execution), variable management (pre and post execution), folders (inside collections, for better management of APIs), newman, easy-ci-integration (and probably a few more things that I am not able to recall right now).

I use Swagger UI because it's an easy tool for end-consumers to visualize and test our APIs. It focuses on that ! And it's directly embedded and delivered with the APIs. Postman's built-in tools aren't bad, but their main focus isn't the documentation and also, they are hosted outside the project.

I recommend Postman because it's easy to use with history option. Also, it has very great features like runner, collections, test scripts runners, defining environment variables and simple exporting and importing data.

Postman supports automation and organization in a way that Insomnia just doesn't. Admittedly, Insomnia makes it slightly easy to query the data that you get back (in a very MongoDB-esque query language) but Postman sets you up to develop the code that you would use in development/testing right in the editor.
