Amazon SNS vs Firebase: What are the differences?

Amazon SNS (Simple Notification Service) and Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) are cloud-based messaging services catering to different ecosystems. Let's discuss the key differences between the two.

  1. Scalability: Amazon SNS is highly scalable as it can handle millions of messages per second and supports numerous subscribers. On the other hand, Firebase uses a real-time database that allows for automatic scaling up and down based on demand, thus providing a highly scalable solution.

  2. Push Notification Support: Amazon SNS provides push notification support for multiple platforms such as iOS, Android, Windows, and more. Firebase, on the other hand, offers comprehensive push notification services with easy integration, targeting, and automatic message delivery optimizations.

  3. Real-time Database: Firebase offers a real-time database that enables synchronization of data across different clients in real-time without the need for manual updates. Amazon SNS, on the other hand, does not provide a real-time database feature.

  4. Data Analytics: Firebase offers robust data analytics capabilities, including event tracking, user demographics, and user behaviors, through its Firebase Analytics feature. Amazon SNS does not have built-in data analytics capabilities.

  5. Authentication and Authorization: Firebase provides authentication and authorization services out-of-the-box, ensuring secure access to the application's resources. In contrast, Amazon SNS does not offer built-in authentication and authorization features.

  6. Pricing Model: Amazon SNS operates on a "pay-as-you-go" pricing model, where customers pay for the actual usage. Firebase, on the other hand, offers a pricing model based on usage tiers, providing free usage up to a certain limit.

In summary, Amazon SNS offers a versatile solution for cross-platform messaging with extensive integration capabilities into AWS services. Firebase Cloud Messaging, tightly integrated with the Firebase ecosystem, excels in delivering messages to mobile and web applications with features like real-time updates.

We are starting to work on a web-based platform aiming to connect artists (clients) and professional freelancers (service providers). In-app, timeline-based, real-time communication between users (& storing it), file transfers, and push notifications are essential core features. We are considering using Node.js, ExpressJS, React, MongoDB stack with Socket.IO & Apollo, or maybe using Real-Time Database and functionalities of Firebase.

FirebaseFirebase

I would recommend looking hard into Firebase for this project, especially if you do not have dedicated full-stack or backend members on your team.

The real time database, as you mentioned, is a great option, but I would also look into Firestore. Similar to RTDB, it adds more functions and some cool methods as well. Also, another great thing about Firebase is you have easy access to storage and dead simple auth as well.

Node.js Express MongoDB Socket.IO and Apollo are great technologies as well, and may be the better option if you do not wish to cede as much control to third parties in your application.

Overall, I say if you wish to focus more time developing your React application instead of other parts of your stack, Firebase is a great way to do that.

    What is Amazon SNS?

Amazon Simple Notification Service makes it simple and cost-effective to push to mobile devices such as iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle Fire, and internet connected smart devices, as well as pushing to other distributed services. Besides pushing cloud notifications directly to mobile devices, SNS can also deliver notifications by SMS text message or email, to Simple Queue Service (SQS) queues, or to any HTTP endpoint.

    What is Firebase?

Firebase is a cloud service designed to power real-time, collaborative applications. Simply add the Firebase library to your application to gain access to a shared data structure; any changes you make to that data are automatically synchronized with the Firebase cloud and with other clients within milliseconds.
