Amazon Quicksight vs Metabase vs Mode: What are the differences?

  1. User Interface: Amazon Quicksight has a modern and sleek user interface designed with a focus on simplicity and ease of use. Metabase provides a more basic and straightforward interface, suitable for users who prefer simplicity over advanced features. Mode, on the other hand, offers a highly customizable interface that allows users to tailor the platform to their specific needs and preferences.

  2. Data Visualization Options: Amazon Quicksight offers a wide range of powerful data visualization options, including interactive dashboards, customizable charts, and advanced analytics capabilities. Metabase provides a more limited set of visualization tools, ideal for users who want a quick and simple way to visualize their data. Mode offers a comprehensive suite of data visualization options that can be customized to suit the needs of both technical and non-technical users.

  3. Data Sources Integration: Amazon Quicksight seamlessly integrates with various data sources such as Amazon Redshift, RDS, and S3, making it easy to access and analyze data from different sources. Metabase supports a wide range of data sources but may require additional setup and configuration for integration. Mode offers robust integration capabilities with popular data sources and APIs, allowing users to easily connect and analyze data from multiple sources.

4. Collaboration Features: Amazon Quicksight provides collaboration features such as shared dashboards, annotations, and commenting capabilities, making it easy for teams to work together on data analysis projects. Metabase offers basic collaboration features that allow users to share queries and dashboards with team members. Mode provides advanced collaboration tools, including real-time collaboration, version control, and team sharing options.

  5. Security and Access Control: Amazon Quicksight offers robust security features such as fine-grained access controls, encryption, and data isolation, ensuring that data is kept secure and confidential. Metabase provides basic security features but may lack the advanced security controls required for sensitive data. Mode offers enterprise-level security features, including role-based access control, audit logs, and data governance tools.

  6. Cost and Pricing: Amazon Quicksight offers a pay-as-you-go pricing model with options for both standard and enterprise editions, making it suitable for users with varying budget constraints. Metabase is open-source and free to use, making it an ideal choice for individuals and small teams with limited budgets. Mode offers flexible pricing plans based on usage and features, catering to both small businesses and large enterprises.

In Summary, Amazon Quicksight, Metabase, and Mode each offer unique features and capabilities, with differences in user interface design, data visualization options, data sources integration, collaboration features, security controls, and pricing models.

Advice on Mode, Metabase, Amazon Quicksight

Review

Hey Alfaz, the tools you mentioned are not exactly BI tools and are essentially ELT tools meant to collect data from third-party data sources (tools used for sales, marketing, advertising, etc) and ingest the data into a data warehouse (Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, etc). You can check out the linked article to learn more.

I have also recommended some BI tools like Mode, Looker, and SiSense. Happy to answer follow-up questions!

Decided

Very easy-to-use UI. Good way to make data available inside the company for analysis.

Has some built-in visualizations and can be easily integrated with other JS visualization libraries such as D3.

Can be embedded into product to provide reporting functions.

Support team are helpful.

The only complain I have is lack of API support. Hard to track changes as codes and automate report deployment.
