StillAlive vs updown.io: What are the differences?

What is StillAlive? A simple, easy to implement way to check that your website is up, and also that it's still working properly. Using our stories feature, you can test many different features of your live, production website. It could be you need to find out if logins are working. Whatever it is, StillAlive can (or will) be able to test it.

What is updown.io? HTTP monitoring solution with a clean UI and cheap and simple pricing. updown is an online service that checks your website's status by periodically sending an HTTP HEAD request to the URL of your choice. It then notifies you by email or sms when your website is not responding correctly.

StillAlive and updown.io can be primarily classified as "Website Monitoring" tools.

Some of the features offered by StillAlive are:

  • Nothing to install- All you need to do is create a script that mimics the behaviour path you want to have us test.
  • Make sure your site works as expected- StillAlive doesn't just ping your website to see if it is online. It mimics the actual behaviour of your users, viewing your site as your users would and navigating around doing real stuff. So don't just make sure your website is responding with a 200 OK, make sure your shopping cart works, or that users can log in.
  • High Availability- StillAlive helps you make sure your application is online, 24x7.

On the other hand, updown.io provides the following key features:

  • One-click sign in
  • Fast checks
  • Email/SMS alerts
Decisions about StillAlive and updown.io

We needed a monitoring tool to track application uptime, response time and provide a public status page.

After looking at several options including the big ones like Pingdom and Pingometer, we went with updown.io. Their pricing model allowed us to pay for exactly what we needed (number of endpoints and frequency) without selling us anything we weren't going to use.

Their interface is easy to use, service has been rock solid and their public status pages look great.
