RocketChat vs Telegram : What are the differences?

## Introduction

RocketChat and Telegram are two popular messaging platforms that offer different features and functionalities. Below are the key differences between the two:

1. **End-to-End Encryption**: Telegram offers end-to-end encryption as an optional feature for secret chats, while RocketChat does not provide end-to-end encryption by default. Users of RocketChat need to rely on third-party plugins for secure communication.

2. **Customization and Self-Hosting**: RocketChat gives users the flexibility to customize their chat platform and supports self-hosting, allowing organizations to have full control over their data and privacy. In contrast, Telegram is a cloud-based service with limited customization options.

3. **User Interface and Experience**: Telegram has a simpler and more user-friendly interface, making it easier for users to navigate and use the platform. RocketChat, on the other hand, offers more robust features and customization options, but may have a steeper learning curve for new users.

4. **Integration and Extensibility**: RocketChat provides a wide range of integrations with popular business tools and services, making it a preferred choice for businesses and organizations. While Telegram offers a more straightforward messaging experience, it lacks the extensive integration capabilities of RocketChat.

5. **Community and Support**: RocketChat has a strong community of developers and contributors, providing regular updates, bug fixes, and support to users. Telegram also has a large user base, but the level of community support may vary based on the region and user base.

6. **File Sharing and Collaboration Tools**: RocketChat offers advanced file sharing and collaboration tools, such as screen sharing, video conferencing, and collaborative document editing. In comparison, Telegram focuses more on messaging and communication features, with limited collaboration tools.

In Summary, RocketChat and Telegram differ in terms of encryption, customization, user interface, integration capabilities, community support, and collaboration tools.

Decisions about RocketChat and Telegram
Stefan Schuchlenz

We chose RocketChat over other communications suites like Cliq or Slack mainly because we can self-host it on our own infrastructure. Since we have quite some projects going on which demand that we stay in touch with a lot of different stakeholders, pricing was an issue, too. With RocketChat, we have a huge set of features basically for free, RC offers apps for all major devices and systems and overall, we're very happy with it. The only downside is the limited amount of apps and integrations, but we can make due with what we have available.
