KDevelop vs Visual Studio Code: What are the differences?

Introduction:

KDevelop and Visual Studio Code are two popular integrated development environments (IDEs) used by developers for coding purposes. While both of them have their own set of features and functionalities, there are several key differences that set them apart from each other. In this article, we will explore these differences in detail.

  1. Platform Compatibility: KDevelop is primarily designed for Linux platforms and offers extensive support for various programming languages. On the other hand, Visual Studio Code is a cross-platform IDE that can be used on Windows, macOS, and Linux. This makes Visual Studio Code a more versatile choice for developers who work on multiple operating systems.

  2. Extensions and Plugins: Visual Studio Code provides a vast library of extensions and plugins that can be easily installed to enhance its functionality. These extensions cover a wide range of programming languages, code formatting styles, debugging tools, and more. While KDevelop also supports extensions, its collection is not as extensive as Visual Studio Code.

  3. Debugging Capabilities: Visual Studio Code offers robust debugging capabilities with features like breakpoints, step-by-step debugging, variable inspection, and more. It supports various programming languages and provides a seamless debugging experience. On the other hand, while KDevelop also supports debugging, its debugging features may not be as comprehensive as Visual Studio Code.

  4. User Interface and Customization: Visual Studio Code has a highly customizable user interface, allowing developers to personalize their coding environment according to their preferences. It offers themes, icons, layout options, and various settings that can be modified to create a personalized coding experience. KDevelop, on the other hand, has a more conventional user interface with limited customization options.

  5. Integration with Other Tools: Visual Studio Code has excellent integration capabilities with various external tools and services, making it easier for developers to work with version control systems, build systems, and other development workflows. KDevelop also supports integration with external tools, but its range of integrations may not be as extensive as Visual Studio Code.

  6. Project Management Features: Visual Studio Code provides advanced project management features like workspace management, task automation, and project-specific settings. It allows developers to organize their codebase efficiently and automate repetitive tasks. While KDevelop also offers project management features, they may not be as robust as Visual Studio Code's offerings.

In summary, the key differences between KDevelop and Visual Studio Code lie in their platform compatibility, extension libraries, debugging capabilities, user interface customization, integration with external tools, and project management features. These differences make them suitable for different developers based on their specific requirements and preferences.

Visual Studio Code became famous over the past 3+ years I believe. The clean UI, easy to use UX and the plethora of integrations made it a very easy decision for us. Our gripe with Sublime was probably only the UX side. VSCode has not failed us till now, and still is able to support our development env without any significant effort.

Goland being paid, as well as built only for Go seemed like a significant limitation to not consider it.

I decided to choose VSCode over Sublime text for my Systems Programming class in C. What I love about VSCode is its awesome ability to add extensions. Intellisense is a beautiful debugger, and Remote SSH allows me to login and make real-time changes in VSCode to files on my university server. This is an awesome alternative to going back and forth on pushing/pulling code and logging into servers in the terminal. Great choice for anyone interested in C programming!
