Browserling vs Docker: What are the differences?

  1. Infrastructure Type: Browserling is a web-based application that allows users to test their websites on different browsers, operating systems, and devices without the need for any installation. On the other hand, Docker is a platform that uses containerization technology to package and run applications with their dependencies in isolated environments.
  2. Deployment Flexibility: Browserling requires an internet connection to access the service, making it suitable for testing websites on various setups. In contrast, Docker can be run on any system capable of running virtual machines, providing more deployment flexibility for a wide range of applications.
  3. Resource Consumption: Browserling consumes resources from the server on which it is hosted, depending on the number of users accessing the service simultaneously. Docker, being a containerization platform, isolates applications and their dependencies, resulting in more efficient resource utilization.
  4. Isolation: Browserling allows users to interact with different browser environments through a web interface but does not provide the same level of isolation as Docker containers. Docker offers full isolation for applications, preventing conflicts between different software versions or dependencies.
  5. Customization: Browserling offers predefined browser configurations for testing purposes, limiting customization options for users. Docker, on the other hand, allows complete customization of the container environment, enabling users to tailor settings according to their specific requirements.
  6. Scalability: Browserling is suitable for individual users or small teams looking to quickly test their websites on various browsers, making it less scalable for large-scale deployments. Docker, with its containerization technology, provides scalability by allowing users to deploy and manage multiple containers across different environments efficiently.

In Summary, Browserling is a web-based application for cross-browser testing, whereas Docker is a containerization platform for running applications in isolated environments with more flexibility and customization options.

Chose
LXDLXD
over
DockerDocker

lxd/lxc and Docker aren't congruent so this comparison needs a more detailed look; but in short I can say: the lxd-integrated administration of storage including zfs with its snapshot capabilities as well as the system container (multi-process) approach of lxc vs. the limited single-process container approach of Docker is the main reason I chose lxd over Docker.

What are some alternatives to Browserling and Docker?
        BrowserStack
BrowserStack is the leading test platform built for developers & QAs to expand test coverage, scale & optimize testing with cross-browser, real device cloud, accessibility, visual testing, test management, and test observability.
        CrossBrowserTesting
It's implemented to ensure a website's functionality and design and includes testing a range of devices and operating systems being used in the market and customer base.
        Selenium
Selenium automates browsers. That's it! What you do with that power is entirely up to you. Primarily, it is for automating web applications for testing purposes, but is certainly not limited to just that. Boring web-based administration tasks can (and should!) also be automated as well.
        Karma
Karma is not a testing framework, nor an assertion library. Karma just launches a HTTP server, and generates the test runner HTML file you probably already know from your favourite testing framework. So for testing purposes you can use pretty much anything you like.
        LambdaTest
LambdaTest platform provides secure, scalable and insightful test orchestration for website, and mobile app testing. Customers at different points in their DevOps lifecycle can leverage Automation and/or Manual testing on LambdaTest.
