GitKraken vs PhpStorm: What are the differences?

Introduction

In this post, we will discuss the key differences between GitKraken and PhpStorm, two popular development tools used by software developers for version control and coding respectively.

  1. Integration with Git: GitKraken is primarily a Git client, providing a visually appealing and user-friendly interface for managing Git repositories. It offers a range of Git-related features such as branch visualization, conflict resolution, and pull request management. On the other hand, PhpStorm is a full-fledged integrated development environment (IDE) that supports multiple version control systems including Git. It offers advanced Git integration along with a wide range of coding tools and features.

  2. Code Editing and Refactoring: PhpStorm is focused on providing powerful code editing capabilities, facilitating code navigation, completion, and analysis across different programming languages. It offers extensive code refactoring tools, allowing developers to efficiently improve the structure and quality of their code. GitKraken, being primarily a Git client, does not provide the same level of code editing and refactoring features as PhpStorm.

  3. Language Support: PhpStorm supports a wide range of programming languages and frameworks, making it a versatile IDE for developers working on different projects. It offers syntax highlighting, autocompletion, and other language-specific features tailored to each supported language. GitKraken, although not an IDE, provides basic language support with syntax highlighting for a limited number of programming languages.

  4. Project Management: PhpStorm offers comprehensive project management features, allowing developers to efficiently organize and navigate through their projects. It provides a dedicated project view, powerful search and navigation tools, and support for various project management frameworks. GitKraken, being primarily a Git client, focuses more on managing the source code rather than the overall project structure.

  5. Debugger and Testing Tools: PhpStorm includes a built-in debugger that allows developers to debug their code and step through it line by line, helping them identify and fix issues. It also provides extensive support for testing frameworks, allowing developers to write and run tests within the IDE. GitKraken, being a Git client, does not offer debugging or testing tools.

  6. Collaboration and Teamwork: GitKraken includes features designed specifically for collaboration and teamwork, such as the ability to view and leave comments on specific lines of code, and support for pull requests and code reviews. PhpStorm, on the other hand, provides features for collaboration through its integration with various project management and version control systems, allowing developers to work with their teammates more effectively.

In summary, GitKraken primarily focuses on providing a visually appealing and user-friendly interface for Git-related tasks, while PhpStorm is a feature-rich IDE that offers advanced coding tools and supports multiple version control systems. Depending on their needs, developers can choose the tool that best suits their requirements for code editing, project management, debugging, language support, and collaboration.

Advice on PhpStorm, GitKraken

Needs adviceonVisual Studio CodeVisual Studio CodePhpStormPhpStormWebStormWebStorm

When I switched to Visual Studio Code 12 months ago from PhpStorm I was in love, it was great. However after using VS Code for a year, I see myself switching back and forth between WebStorm and VS Code. The VS Code plugins are great however I notice Prettier, auto importing of components and linking to the definitions often break, and I have to restart VS Code multiple times a week and sometimes a day.

We use Ruby here so I do like that Visual Studio Code highlights that for me out of the box, with WebStorm I'd need to probably also install RubyMine and have 2 IDE's going at the same time.

Should I stick with Visual Studio Code, or switch to something else? #help
