Adobe Dreamweaver vs Wix: What are the differences?

Introduction

In this article, we will explore the key differences between Adobe Dreamweaver and Wix, both popular web design and development tools.

  1. Flexibility and Customization: Adobe Dreamweaver offers more flexibility and customization options compared to Wix. Dreamweaver allows you to have more control over the code and design of your website as it is a professional-grade tool primarily aimed at web developers. On the other hand, Wix provides a more simplified drag-and-drop interface, limiting the level of customization that can be achieved without coding knowledge.

  2. Templates and Design: Wix provides a wide range of beautifully designed templates that are easy to customize, making it a great choice for beginners or those with limited design skills. Dreamweaver, on the other hand, does not offer pre-designed templates, but allows you to create your own custom designs from scratch. This makes Dreamweaver a better choice for professionals who prefer complete design control.

  3. Coding and Development: Dreamweaver offers advanced coding features and support for multiple programming languages, making it a powerful tool for web developers. It allows you to write and edit code directly, use code hints, and integrate with external code editors. Wix, on the other hand, does not provide extensive coding capabilities and is more focused on visual design. It uses a simplified drag-and-drop interface for building websites without the need for coding knowledge.

  4. Hosting and Platform: Wix is an all-in-one platform that provides hosting services, while Dreamweaver is a standalone tool that requires you to find your own hosting provider. With Wix, you can easily publish your website with just a few clicks, whereas with Dreamweaver, you need to manually upload your website files to your hosting server. This makes Wix a more convenient option for beginners who want everything in one place.

  5. Collaboration and Teamwork: Dreamweaver offers features that facilitate collaboration among team members working on the same project. It allows multiple developers to work on the code simultaneously, with features like code highlighting and commenting. Wix, on the other hand, does not offer extensive collaboration features and is more suited for individual or small-scale website projects.

  6. Learning Curve: Dreamweaver has a steeper learning curve compared to Wix. It requires knowledge of coding and web development concepts, making it a better fit for experienced web designers and developers. Wix, on the other hand, is designed to be beginner-friendly, with its easy-to-use interface and intuitive drag-and-drop builder. It requires little to no coding knowledge, making it accessible to those with limited technical skills.

In summary, Adobe Dreamweaver offers more advanced customization, coding capabilities, and collaboration features, catering to experienced web developers and designers. On the other hand, Wix provides a simpler, beginner-friendly approach with pre-designed templates, an intuitive interface, and convenient hosting options.

I know a little about writing website code without any aids, but am not comfortable doing it. I want to redo the site of a community group and then probably maintain it. I am not interested in any other website. I do not know Wix too well, but at this point it seems very limiting. I would rather not work with templates, is there a tool where you just move design elements around on a virtual screen?

Hi Sally

The advantages of choosing a drag-and-drop interface builder are obvious until you try to step outside what they offer. They rarely do exactly what you want, so you have to either compromise your requirements or struggle to make the tools do something they weren't designed for.

There's also a hidden gotcha in what you ask. You may be thinking of the screen as a sheet of paper on which you can lay out elements as you please. The trouble is, it's more like a sheet of rubber - infinitely stretchable rubber at that. However you lay out your components, it'll look different on every screen, from PC to tablet to smartphone, and some of these will look terrible. High-level tools do the best they can, but since they can't tell what you have in mind they don't always make a very good job of it.

I tagged JavaScript as my recommendation, not because I expect you to go and learn enough of it to be proficient (I take note of your "not comfortable doing it") but because whatever you use to control your screen will ultimately end up using a lot of JS code. The alternative is to pre-build everything on the server and ship it to the browser (e.g. using WordPress), but then you need PHP instead and the code-writing/testing cycle is lot less immediate.

I'm curious about your comment on not using templates. Can I ask if you feel able to describe your website in plain, unambiguous English? If so, there's no reason in theory why you can't code it in English, other than that few tools exist to do that, the whole world being hooked on complex templating systems for quite primitive languages.

I have for a long time felt the same as you appear to about the tools available. Fortunately for me I was able to devise my own tools, in the form of an English-like scripting language written in JavaScript and intended for people who want to get results but don't want to become programmers. (Or who are programmers but just want something simpler.) It runs entirely in the browser and it's called EasyCoder. You'll find some information at https://easycoder.github.io and I'm happy to answer questions. However you choose to go, good luck!
