Amazon Quicksight vs Power BI: What are the differences?

Key Differences between Amazon Quicksight and Power BI

Amazon Quicksight and Power BI are both powerful business intelligence tools that offer advanced analytics, data visualization, and reporting capabilities. However, there are several key differences between the two platforms.

  1. Data Integration and Connectivity: Amazon Quicksight provides seamless integration with various AWS data sources like S3, Redshift, Athena, and RDS, while Power BI supports a wide range of data sources, including on-premises databases, cloud-based services, and files from various applications. This gives Power BI an advantage in terms of flexibility and compatibility with different data sources.

  2. Pricing Model: Quicksight follows a pay-per-session pricing model, where users are billed based on the number of sessions or interactions with the data. On the other hand, Power BI offers a tiered licensing model, including both free and paid options, making it more suitable for organizations with diverse user requirements and budget constraints.

  3. Collaboration and Sharing: Power BI excels in collaboration and sharing capabilities, allowing users to easily collaborate with others by sharing reports, dashboards, and datasets. It provides advanced security features like row-level security and integration with Active Directory. Quicksight, on the other hand, has limited collaboration features, with the ability to share only dashboards and visuals, and lacks advanced security options like row-level security.

  4. Data Modeling and Preparation: Power BI offers a more robust and intuitive data modeling and preparation environment, with features like Power Query and Power Pivot, making it easier for users to transform and shape their data. Quicksight, although equipped with basic data transformation capabilities, lacks the advanced data modeling and preparation features offered by Power BI.

  5. Visualization Capabilities: Both Quicksight and Power BI offer a wide range of visualization options and customization features. However, Power BI provides a greater number of pre-built visualizations and custom visual options, along with advanced formatting and interaction features. Quicksight, while capable of creating visually appealing dashboards, has a more limited selection of visual types and customization options.

  6. Embedded Analytics: Power BI stands out in terms of its embedded analytics capabilities, allowing developers to seamlessly embed Power BI reports and dashboards within custom applications, websites, and portals. Quicksight has recently introduced embedded analytics, but its capabilities are still more limited compared to Power BI.

In summary, while both Amazon Quicksight and Power BI offer powerful business intelligence capabilities, Power BI provides more flexibility with data sources, advanced collaboration features, robust data modeling options, a wider array of visualization types, and stronger embedded analytics capabilities. On the other hand, Quicksight shines in its seamless integration with AWS data sources and its pay-per-session pricing model.

Power BI is really easy to start with. If you have just several Excel sheets or CSV files, or you build your first automated pipeline, it is actually quite intuitive to build your first reports.

And as we have kept growing, all the additional features and tools were just there within the Azure platform and/or Office 365.

Since we started building Mews, we have already passed several milestones in becoming start up, later also a scale up company and now getting ready to grow even further, and during all these phases Power BI was just the right tool for us.
